Nose: garnet shading into a mellow brick red. Palate: rich, austere, dry, and velvety. The island of Sardinia is off the beaten path, but that simply makes its wines terrific values. Called Grenache in France, Garnacia in Spain, and Cannanou on Sardinia, the grape is versatile and capable of making world-class wines such as Châteaueuf du Pape. This wine is no CdP, but it has a mesmerizing bouquet of violets and red fruits. It is warm, dry, and harmonious with plum, strawberry, and raspberry flavors with a nice oak overtone. Aged for two years in large Slavonian casks, this is a medium-bodied, food-friendly wine at a modest 13.5% alcohol. Sella & Mosca’s I Piani estate is one of the largest contiguous vineyards (1200 acres) in Italy and one of the largest wine estates in Europe. Sella & Mosca, which celebrated its centennial in 1999, was founded by Messrs. Eriminio Sella and Edgardo Mosca. Today the property is owned by the Campari Group.
